Recognising the Symptoms and Types of Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural emotional response rooted in our “fight-or-flight” mechanism, which protects us from potential threats. While experiencing anxiety and stress is common, persistent feelings of distress that interfere with daily activities, what you value or relationships, may indicate that anxiety has ended up controlling you. Not all people who struggle with anxiety necessarily meet criteria for a specific anxiety disorder. Though even without a diagnosis, anxiety can still be problematic.

Several conditions fall under the anxiety umbrella, each with unique characteristics:

1. Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Characterised by persistent, excessive worry about everyday situations.

2. Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia): Involves intense fear or anxiety related to social situations.

3. Panic Disorder: Marked by recurrent panic attacks involving sudden episodes of intense fear.

4. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): A pattern of unwanted thoughts and repetitive behaviours that disrupt daily life.

Addressing the Root Causes and Triggers of Anxiety

Understanding when anxiety shifts from being helpful to a hindrance is crucial for managing and overcoming its challenges.

While anxiety can lead to various problems, it may sometimes result from underlying issues. Anxiety can also be an unconscious attempt to cope with other concerns. For instance, someone who worries excessively might have underlying concerns of losing control. Whilst there are lots of themes with people who suffer from anxiety, it is important to understand your unique experience.

A comprehensive assessment can help identify the specific aspects of your anxiety and determine if you meet the criteria for a diagnosis. Understanding the root causes of your anxiety, what perpetuates it, and developing an individualised treatment plan are essential steps toward managing it effectively.
